<description>I&#039;m a Pilot for a european airline. In Europe, most airlines have the policy, that all electronic devices have to be switched off during Takeoff - until the seatbelt signs are switched off - and before landing (when the seatbelt signs are switched on again, in combination with an announcement, to switch off electronic devices.)

For the time in between, e.g. during cruise flight, it is safe and legal to use the kindle for reading books.

I assume, this is also valid for airlines from other regions, e.g. the United States

From a technical point of view, it is also safe to use the Kindle during takeoff and landing, however it would be illegal to do so.

The Wireless function should be turned off, whenever onboard an airplane. A single Kindle with WLAN on will certainly not do any harm, however - if EVERY passenger is using a Kindle with wireless switched on - and on an old airplane - electromagnetic waves may impact avionic systems.
