If you wish to listen to background music while reading on your kindle, you’ll first need to transfer MP3 files to your Kindle using the USB connection. For information on transferring files, see Tip For Transferring Files between Kindle and Computer.
Note: Kindle plays audio files as background music only and does not function as an MP3 player or contain options to create play lists or organize audio files. When background music is on, it continues to play until you turn it off or open an audiobook.
Playing or Stopping background music:
- Press the Home key to go to your Home screen.
- Select “Menu” using the select wheel.
- Select “Play Music” or “Stop Music” from the Home screen menu using the select wheel.
Adjusting the Volume and Using Headphones
1. Locate the built-in volume controls and a headphone jack on the bottom of the unit.
2. Press the plus or minus volume buttons to increase or decrease the volume of the music.
3. Use headphones for private listening (if you choose)… When headphones are connected to Kindle, please be aware that the external speaker will be disabled…If you choose, you can also attach external speakers via the headphone jack.
You can listen to Audio books on your kindle from Audible.com. Here’s how:
- Log on to http://www.audible.com/kindle
- Create an account or Log In, if you already have an audible account.
- Download and install the latest AudibleManager software on your PC.
- Connect your Kindle to your PC using the USB connection.
- Launch the AudibleManager on your PC.
- Activate your Kindle using the “Activate . . .” command under Devices in AudibleManager… This will authorize your Kindle to play the audiobooks you purchase at Audible.com.
- Use AudibleManager to transfer your audiobook to your Kindle.
Listening to Audiobook
After you download your audio book, a small speaker icon will appear next to the title of each audiobooks on your Kindle Home screen.
- Select the title from your Home screen using the select wheel.
- On the detail page, choose the desired audio control button using the select wheel.
Among the available audio controls for navigation are the following:
- Beginning: Takes you back to the beginning of the audiobook.
- Previous Section: Begins playback from the previous section/chapter.
- Back 30 sec.: Begins playback 30 seconds back from your current location.
- Play/Pause: Plays or Pauses the audio playback. (A Stop option is not available.)
- Forward 30 sec.: Begins playback 30 seconds forward from your current location.
- Next Section: Begins playback from the next section/chapter.
Adjusting the Volume and Using Headphones
- Use the built-in volume control at the bottom your Kindle to increase or decrease the volume.
- Insert a headphone in the headphone jack at the bottom of the unit, to privately listen to the audio book, the external speaker will be disabled.
You can highlight text or take notes in kindle the way you would use a highlighter or pen on paper. Everything you highlight and note is also added to your “My Clippings” file that appears on your Kindle Home screen.
Highlighting one or more lines
1. Scroll the cursor to the first line that you want to highlight and press the select wheel.
2. Select “Add Highlight.” from the menu to mark the beginning of your selection with a horizontal line. 3. Scroll to the end of the passage you want to highlight and press the select wheel…a box will appear around the highlighted passage.
Removing a highlight:
1. Scroll to any line in the highlighted passage and press the select wheel.
2. Choose “Delete Highlight” and press the select wheel…The box will disappear from around the passage indicating that it is no longer highlighted.
Adding a note:
1. Scroll anywhere in your content and press the select wheel.
2. Select “Add Note” from the menu that appears and use the keyboard to enter your changes.
3. When you are finished, scroll to “Done” and press the select wheel.
Editing or Deleting a Note:
1. Return to a note and press the select wheel.
2. Choose “Edit Note” or “Delete Note” from the menu to carry out the selected action.
Viewing Your Highlights and Notes:
1. Select “My Notes & Marks” from the menu to display all marks you’ve made in a particular reading. Each entry will show the location number, highlighted passage, and notes.
2. Select Next Page to move through all highlights and notes…you can turn pages in this file just as you would in a book.
3. Select a highlight or note and view the marked section in your reading by scrolling to the desired item and press the select wheel…to return to you previous reading location prior to activating the My Notes and Marks view section, press the Back button.
