The Amazon Kindle DX Review

kindle dx reviewIf you are thinking of buying an Ebook reader, then this Amazon  Kindle DX review review will help you understand this Ebook reader and decide if it is the right choice for you.

Some of the key things you should consider when buying any e-book reader are screen size, PDF capability, content organization, wireless access, ease of use, and price.

Screen Size Matters

The Kindle Dx comes with a sharp, crisp, high contrast, 9.7″ diagonal E-Ink screen that is ideal for reading a broad range of reading material. This simply means that the screen is above average amongst e-readers kindle dxand is efficient for someone who need an e-reader that will last, and whose general use of the e-reader is to read a broad array of professional and personal documents on the go…plus books, magazines, and blogs.

The large screen size is definitely a plus as it allows more text per page on the screen…even with the largest font, and PDF docs appear on the screen in exactly the same way they would on a computer screen. Also, Graphics, charts, and table display like they would on paper.

What this means is that even if you are visually impaired…and must use larger fonts, you can still get the same book-like….article-like…journal-like reading experience on the DX. You will also eliminate the need to carry a laptop, or binder filled with professional docs. With the Kindle DX, you can simply load your reading material on the device, tuck it in your bag, and read as you go.

…and loading PDF document is relatively easy. You simply convert your personal docs to PDF, then drag and drop them from your computer to the Kindle DX…or if you prefer, you can use Amazon’s free-email service to convert and upload files directly to the DX. This may take a little longer than normal, but is a viable alternative.

 PDF Counts

Kindle DXIf you read a lot of PDF documents, this device is for you. Not only do you get nice crisp display formats, but your documents rotate  between normal and landscape mode with ease. You can also zoom in and out of graphics for better image view.

What this means is that the DX offers an above average PDF reading experience close in proximity to actually reading on paper. The only downside is that flipping back and forth between landscape and normal mode…and turning pages will drain your battery. So, be sure to turn this feature off when not reading… and pay attention to your battery level.

Tip: For even better viewing, convert your personal document to PDF with the larger fonts prior to uploading to the Kindle DX. This is a little extra work, but it is worth the effort.

Content Organization…A Work In Progress

There are no file folders to organize your reading files, but you can sort them  according to  author, title,  “most recent first,” and “Collections.”

“Collections” allow you to organize your books by genre or whatsoever else you like. However, unless you resort to putting symbols before the collection names, you will not be able to alphabetize them when in “view by collections” mode.

What this means is that if you are going to organize your reading material, your best bet is to use the ”collections” mode as it gives you flexibility with your file organization. Hopefully future Kindle DX’s will come equipped with a more sophisticated organizational system.

Whispernet Makes A Difference

If you are on the market for an e-reader and can’t decide between the kindle and another kindle amazondevice, consider whispernet…it really does make a difference. It is a free, no subscription based service that comes with the Amazon Kindle DX. You will get internet access anywhere sprint reception can be found…and you can purchase books, magazine, and newspapers and have them in less than 60 seconds. You can even access the web, check your web-based email, look up direction, find weather reports, movie times, and so on…

This simply means that with the Kindle DX, you can switch from ”work” to “play” in one click. When you need to break from reading professional documents, you can simply hop over to a targeted website, find the location of your nearest restaurant, movie theatre, or hang out spot…all in one click.

The only drawback is that the web browser is rudimentary. It does not show pages well, and you definitely would not want to use it to surf the web, but if you have a destination website that is heavy in content, then reading on the Kindle DX is vastly superior to reading on the iPhone….and it’s all free…something you want to enjoy while it lasts.

The Kindle DX Speaks

Text-to-speech is a function with which the DX reads to you. Th voice is a bit animated, but it is a really nice addition. MP3 bring the musical voice to life…though of low quality. You can listen to either with an earphone via the earphone jack on top of the device or through the small speakers at the bottom of the device.

This means that when you get tired of reading on page text, you can simply switch on the text-to-speech mode and listen as the device reads to you. This frees up time to do a simultaneous task, while reading…without losing ground in the reading.

Counting The Cost Of The Kindle DX

So what’s the cost of getting a Kindle DX? The answer is $379. This is a bit on the pricy side, but let’s review for a minute if it’s worth it. What would it cost you to copy or print business documents, place them in a binder, tuck them in your bag and drag them along with you? What about those newpapers, magazines, and books? How much would it cost you to  walk to the paper stand,  bookstore, or  library each time you need a book, magazine, or newspaper?

Perhaps the cost is minimal with each trip, but over time it certainly does adds up. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a device that does it all for you?…delivered on a high resolution screen for a one-time cost?

If you read a ton of PDFs, you will definitely get heavy use out of it. If you read lots of books, you will get tons of access, if you read newspaper, it will be delivered to you every morning, and if you read articles, you can have them delivered in no time.

So with that, I highly recommend the Kindle DX to anyone who carries the equivalent of binders full of PDF document while traveling…who reads a lot of papers, magazines articles, journal articles, and newspaper…and don’t mind having them delivered at their fingertips.
