Apple iPad – The Low Down!

Apple iPad – The Low Down!

I have been quiet about this so-called revolutionary iPad amidst all the hype for a week…but I cannot hold my peace any longer!

I had questions! Lots of them!

… Was it just a super iPhone, without the Phone? Yes! With a bigger screen, and ibook store.  Will I have to fork over between $499 – $829, depending on my choice of device,  and still pay for data transmission?

Will I have to sign a contract with AT&T (yes the love relationship continues) to get my hands on one of them.

It turns out I don’t have to sign a contract, but I still have to pay $30 / month for an unlimited data plan or 14.99/month for up to 250 MB which give you free use of  AT&T Wifi hotspots.

Can I do without this data plan if I buy the iPad? No! If I don’t pay the $30, I get zero data. What use would the device be to me then? None! Unless of course, I find another way to stream the data to the device.

Is it a direct competitor to the Amazon  Kindle 2? I think I can answer that one really quickly. Yes! It is an eBook reader and much much more which is what makes it so attractive. Just like the kindle, you can download books directly  to the iPad, except of course you can also download, music, photos, movies, games, browse the internet, watch  youtube videos in HD,  and much more…

The one noticeable difference in favor of the Kindle is that you pay zero for data transmission.

What about the specs? 9.7″ screen (nice size), 1 GHz processor, fully touch-sensitive screen, 16-64 Gb flash hard drive, 1/2 inch thick, bluetooth, Wi-fi, 3G, 10 hour battery (more like 6 hr)…

Since it is so much a computer in the palm of your hands, will I be able to download other “stuff” from the internet not “istore” related?

Well it turns out I will be able to sync it with my computer, which I am assuming will allow me to do just that…will just have to wait and see what are the limitations.

How many models are available? Two: a Wifi and a Wifi + 3G.

What will it cost me?

16 GB

32 GB

64 GB

Wifi

$499

$599

$699

Wifi + 3G

$629

$729

$829

I got to tell ya! These guys at apple are visionaries. They understand what move consumers to spend money. A gadget like this is certain to make its mark.

That’s it in a nutshell. So what do you think? Will it be a hit or a miss?

The eBook Reader Year In Review!

The eBook Reader Year In Review!

Whew! What a year it has been?

…the arrival of Barnes & Nobles Nook reader,  the disappearance of older versions of Sony’s Digital readers and the arrival of the TouchPocket,  and Daily editions – now available at your local electronic store.

…big upgrades to the Amazon Kindle 2 – ability to view PDF natively and rotate screen…plus  view  Kindle books on your PC.

…Google’s added twist to the ebook reader battle making its  public domain ebooks available on numerous ereaders…except the Amazon Kindle .

…Amazon filing an opposition to Google’s landmark settlement with publishers and authors claiming that it violates the anti-trust laws and would give google a monopoly over millions of “orphan works” that would gouge consumers and stifle competition if it wins court approval,

…The Launch of the Kindle DX

…Kindle’s move into the international market (taking yet another lead)

…the drastic drop in ereader prices

…the ePub format virus ‘infecting’ several readers…except the Amazon Kindle…again!

…Launch of many other ebooks readers , includng,  Eco ebook reader, cooler ereader…

…Astak’s EZ reader given permission to install Adobe Digital Editions firmware enabling it to view copyright protected ebooks.

…Netbook giant Asus working on a clever, versatile, cheap ebook reader that looks exactly like a book…with the ability to browse the net one page while navigating book content on the other.

… iRex iLiad’s new DR800SG  offering the option to purchase digital books ( from Barnes & Nobles) and newspapers and magazines wirelessly over the Verizon 3G network.

…the much rumored Apple tablet ereader yet to launched.

…plus much, much, more…

To think that we are still in the early stages of the ebook reader revolution. It is amazing!

It is clear that we are set for a mind blowing 2010! You can expect to see more huge developments as it unfurls before our very eyes.

While I am at it, let me make a few gutsy predictions…you can take it for what it is worth!

  • The apple tablet reader will finally arrive!
  • Amazon Kindle 3 ( touch screen, book loaning, native internet access…) will be unveiled.
  • There will be a Nook 2 in the making.
  • More ebook readers will adopt wireless content access…thus far we have four (Kindle, sony digital reader, Nook, and iRex…)
  • Several new ebook readers will be introduced.
  • eReader sales  will explode…as more and more people become aware of its existence and begin to take notice of its powerful features.

As ereaders continue to duel for market share, developers will keep the entrepreneurial ‘flames’ buring.

As wireless content access  becomes more common, and more ereaders sync with  one another, the network of communicating ebook readers will expand.

The next big thing has to be internet access…and new ereader applications.

Barnes & Nobles’ book loaning idea could catch on as well.

Look for other ebook readers to move into the international market just like the Amazon Kindle.

It is going to be an exciting 2010 and Freshtech will be there to cover it all.

We would love to hear your thoughts.
