Sony announced the launch of it’s Reader Touch Edition its first 3G wireless reader today.

This is a huge move by the electronic giant in its effort to make major inroads into the Amazon Kindle‘s lead as the major ereader in the industry.

This new wireless device will allow customers to access Sony’s online bookstore, and soon-to-be-announced newspaper and magazine subscriptions.
Customers will also be able to check out ebooks from libraries using their library cards simply by downloading and transferring the books to the reader, which then automatically expire when the lending period ends.
Leading partners in “crime” include the New York public library, the Chicago public library, and overdrive.com.

We are very much intrigued by this particular move by Sony and think it gives the device a major advantage over the Amazon Kindle .
It will be interesting to see how the online giant respond.
…and by the way, there is no web browser!
Stay tuned for a more detailed analysis and comparison as information become available.
